Chess Guide

Main Guide Index / Beginners Stuff / What Is Chess?

Have you ever played the game of chess? You may or may not know that chess is probably the oldest skill game in the world. Played worldwide by amateurs and professionals, it has become a sport in it's own right.

Nobody knows exactly where the board game began it's life. Some historians believe it was around as early as the 2nd century in China. A game very similar to chess called "Xiangqi" (which is sometimes called "elephant chess"), was being played around this early time.
Not everyone agrees with this. Others think chess originated in India around 6th century. The reality is we will never know for certain where it originated and will always be open to speculation.

The modern day rules of chess first took form in Italy during the 16th century. They kept being amended to gradually until the early 19th century, when they reached their current form we know today.

Chess was created as an imitation of warfare. Two players serving as generals of their respective miniature armies, fight to capture the opponent's king, and any hardship or sacrifice is worthwhile if that end is achieved.
