I also like the ladder idea - but you need to be able to challenge players two above you - otherwise there is a real danger of getting stuck behind the player immediately above you - who - you may never be able to get past - if that happens on a couple of ladder rungs the whole ladder stalls and then people quickly lose intrest in it

We can always get plankton to cough up that 5 pounds for each game he loses for the site ehh. Lol. One other ting i forgot to add earlier is a auto refresh time on an actual game play so you dont have to go back to my games and wait till player makes his move then click back to the game to make your move. For tose of us that like to play quick games on the fly and lose focus jumping from location to location to know when its your turn. I know thre is an update button u can click but me being a lazy american lol an auto refresh option would be nice if feasable.

I'd like to make a couple of additional comments as to how I think the ladder idea might work.

I think you would need to be able to have some sort of a queing system i.e. if player in 2nd place is currently playing against 1st place player, then player in third place has right to reserve match against the loser. If the loser of the 1st & 2nd place match does not respond to the challenge within perhaps 24 hours from the end of 1st and 2nd place game then the challenger automatically rises above him to second place on the ladder. If however the loser of 2nd and 3rd place game does respond and the 3rd place challenger forgets to log in then the game would be void after 24 hours and the 2nd place player would maintain his place and be free to re-challenge the player now in 1st place.

Meanwhile, if the player in 4th place wants to enter a challenge to the third place player he would need to wait for the games and challenges above him to be settled, but by introducing a 24 hour time limit for challenges to be taken up or moves to me made, the queing system should ensure that everyone gets a chance to challenge the person above them.

In one sense I think the system would be less fair than the league in that if someone was not able to log in for one evening they could lose a game and drop down, and if they lost access to the internet for an extended period they could drop several places down the ladder. On the other hand, no one would be able to sit at the top of the ladder based on past performance as no points would be accrued, and if a player wanted to keep playing every day and had sufficient ability it should be possible to move up to the top of the ladder and maintain the position.

To start the whole thing off, perhaps the initial positions on the ladder could be worked out by ranking players in relation to their elo (highest at top of ladder), but once it is up and running then any new player wishing to join would need to start from the bottom position (regardless of their elo), and enter a challenge for the position above.

Comments on the above ideas are welcome.

NB: have just seen comment from White pawn and agree that maybe it would need to be possible to enter a challenge to more than one rung above you on the ladder in order to keep things moving, but also think that system of flaggin and queing challenges and forfeiting games if they are not taken up would help with this.

NB: With respect to the idea of tournaments, I have often thought of joining in but not taken the plunge, as am not sure who is playing who and how they are worked out etc.

The tournaments button sounds like a good idea, but I think it might also be an idea if they were made a bit more regulated and official with some sort of trophy awarded to first second and third place.

I also visit a site where you manage your own football team, and on this site there is a button to press that takes you to a trophy cabinet for each player. If a trophy cabinet were added to the profile of each player in the chess league that other players could view by clicking on the designated button I think it would be a good idea.

To make it a bit fairer for everyone even if they were not able to win tournaments, perhaps smaller trophies could be awarded if a player manages to win a run of three, five or ten games for instance in the league without suffering a defeat.

Display of the trophies could be optional by giving the player a button on their control panel, so if anyone did not like the idea they would not have to display their trophies if they prefered not to.

Hello everyone. Thought I'd better post a message myself, feel bad letting 'tal' do all the work. I must thank him with taking on the responsibility of forum moderator.

Well, as you know I don't get a great amount of spare time to work/play on the site nowadays. I'm married with 7 month old son now. I like to be a hands on dad so get very limited spare time now unfortunately. I will try to find the time to improve the site with our members suggestions, but it may take a while, I hope you will be patient with me.

It seems everyone is keen on the ladder idea, but we have to sort the rules out properly from the start. If they get adjusted half-way through, players will get annoyed. Maybe a new ladder could be started each year with a end date?

I like the sound of this idea, wouldn't take too much work.

Yes we had this before a few years ago, but removed it. The problem is a refresh causes your screen to move which some players found very distracting. For example, if you had previously scrolled the screen down to view the board a refresh would make it jump back up the top again.

tal:
1 DAY OPTION

We did have shorter game times than this before but they was scraped because of too many players timing out. I think I had 10 minute and 1 hour games. I guess I could reintroduce a 1 day timer.

Thanks for taking on board a couple of my suggestions Andy. However you want to use them (or not) is fine by me.

Thanks for all your hard work with the site. It is the only chess site that I log onto on a regular basis.

Let me explain my idea of introducing 'chessbots' on this site. I briefly explained it to 'tal' few weeks ago.

I hope to introduce some new players to che55.com. These will be called chessbots and computer controlled. Set at different playing levels, these will give our members the opportunity to always have an opponent to play against.

Their usernames will be a different colour, (thinking yellow) and obviously can't enter leagues.

Any thoughts or suggestions on this idea?

Ok, hope it's better for everyone. I keep moving my mouse to the left where the old control was. I'll get used to it in a day or two.

Ketchuplover, i can see it being fine where it was on a traditional pc and using it myself on a pc it worked well, but i mostly use a tablet when playing this site and im sure others that are using tablets like ipads or toshiba tablet get a large number of accidental moves when hitting the reset button but the touchscreen sensitivity might bump the submit button just giving my input on why i find this placement much better.
