Every chess player here on che55.com is automatically entered into our chess league after completing three games. Participation into the league is compulsory and players cannot remove themselves. This is to stop artificial manipulation of player league positons.
Player positions are sorted by league points they have earned by winning games against other players. A player's points will change when they complete a game, and their league position will adjust automatically at the next update. Player positions are not calculated solely from their ELO rating, though this is factored into the final points scored.
All league points are worked out using a complex algorithm taking into account the games played, games won, games lost, games drawn, timeouts, player's ELO rating, average opponent's ELO rating and days since last logged in.
The position is primarily decided by the points scored only. All new members start will zero points. Points can also be lost, so negative numbers are allowed. There is no minimum or maximum limit these points can reach.
Lets take a look at this fictitious example of the league:

Brief description of each column in the table:
As you can see, these players have positions 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the league. Lets concentrate on the player in 2nd position. His or her league points (highlighted in green) are lower than the player in 1st place, but higher than the player in 3rd position.
Notice how the positions are not ranked by the players ELO ratings. A higher ELO rating doesn't necessarily mean a higher position in the league, but it helps!
First the multiplier point is first calculated. It starts initially at 0, then we:
These are totalled up, and can end up a negative or positive number.
In our example, player in 2nd position has a total of 14 multiplier points. Worked out by 32 wins - 19 losses + 8 draws - 3 timeouts - 2 days not seen = 14
Next we need to work out what this total needs to be multiplied with exactly. This gets a little more complicated...
If the previous multiplier points totalled exactly 0, then the final league points will be 0. Easy one that.
If the multiplier points are greater or less than 0, the formula is as follows:
Points are worked out by taking a certain percentage from the current player's ELO and another percentage from their opponent's average ELO. These percentages vary with the total amount of games played. A new player will have more 'weight' assigned to his/her opponent's average ELO than their ELO rating. This is because an ELO rating becomes more accurate the more games that are played.
Both these percentages taken are added together and divided or multipled by 100. These points are then multiplied by the multipling points calculated earlier. We finally have the player's league points score.
The league has been carefully calculated to allow all chess players a fair chance of a obtaining a good position. Top positions can only be held by winning games. Generally, winning against players with a higher ELO than yourself will gain you the most league points. Avoid timing out any games, as this will quickley slide you down the ranks.
And finally, good luck to all our chess players here on che55.com, happy checkmating.
